The Lapband, sometimes called Adjustable Gastric Banding, is a weight loss procedure that is unlike the Gastric Sleeve because it is reversible and adjustable. The band, made of silicone, is placed around the upper-most portion of the stomach.
What is the main difference between the Lapband and the Gastric Sleeve?
The main difference between the Lapband and the Gastric Sleeve or other bariatric surgeries, is the Lapband is removable. While we do not place a band with the expectation that is will be removed, it can be removed. No portion of your stomach is altered.
How much weight will a patient lose with lap band?
Lap band patients can expect to lose about half of their excess weight, though results will vary for each individual. Commitment to the post-operative diet and physical activity is critical to long term success.
What is the Lap Band Diet?
The Lap Band diet is a well balanced, portion controlled diet rich in lean proteins and fruits and vegetables. Healthy fats and high fiber carbohydrates are also important parts of your new diet.
The best part about the Lap Band diet is that you really can eat most all foods – just in smaller portions. Certain foods work better than others, and there will be some trial and error until you’re comfortable identifying foods that work for you. In terms of protein, most of our patients do very well with eggs, dairy, fish and gently cooked or stewed meat and poultry.
How long does the lap band surgery typically take to perform?
The lap band surgery typically takes about one hour to perform and most patients go home the same day.
How much does the Lap Band procedure cost?
The Adjustable Gastric Band or Lap Band will vary in cost in New York City, but the typical cost is about $18,000. The good news is that many Lap Band procedures are covered by insurance! How much does Lap Band fill cost?
A Lap Band adjustment is usually covered by insurance, but if a fill is not covered, it will cost about $500.
Can people drink carbonated drinks with Lap Band?
Yes, you can drink carbonated drinks with the lap band, though water really is the best form of hydration. We advocate drinking non-caloric beverages or very low calorie liquids such as Crystal Light.
How much can you eat after the Lap Band surgery?
The amount you can eat after surgery will vary based on patient to patient, but most of our patients are satisfied after about 1/2 a cup of food.
How much weight can I expect to lose the first month of the Lap Band?
The amount of weight lost in the first month after placement is dependent on how much excess body weight each patient begins with. Many of our patients lose at least 5 pounds in the week following surgery.
I’m afraid to get a Lap Band.

What is a Lap Band slip? How common is it? What do you do about it?
A Lap Band slip occurs when the band slips from its intended position. Some patients report feeling hungrier following a slip because their pouch is now larger. While this can happen, it’s not to be expected. Depending on the severity of the slippage, your doctor will be able to adjust the band back to its original position.
Can you see the Lap Band port?
You cannot! It’s under the skin.

Can I drink alcohol after Lap Band surgery?

Does nausea and vomiting occur with the Lap Band?
Nausea and vomiting can occur following Lap Band placement. Most patients find that nausea and vomiting occur most commonly due to eating too fast or too much. Taking smaller bites, chewing well and eating modest portions more slowly will help reduce nausea and vomiting.
Should I get a Lap Band revision or Gastric Sleeve?
This is a discussion to be had with your surgical care team. Because each patient presents with different needs and bariatric requirements, it’s hard broadly state whether a Lap Band should be removed in favor of a Gastric Sleeve. Both surgeries are highly effective and produce long lasting weight loss results, however it’s critical for each patient to seek individualized care.
